The Dragon Boat Festival, also known as the Duanwu Festival, is a traditional holiday that commemorates the life and death of the famous Chinese scholar Qu Yuan. It falls on the fifth day of the fifth month according to the Chinese lunar calendar. On this day, people eat Zongzi (a kind of sticky rice dumpling wrapped in bamboo leaves). The shape and color of Zongzi are similar to that of a boat, so people think it looks like a dragon boat. It is said that when Qu Yuan died, people threw Zongzi into the river to feed fish so they wouldn't eat his body. Dragon boat racing is another important activity during this festival. People race dragon boats in memory of Qu Yuan's patriotic spirit. People also wear perfumed pouches and hang mugwort leaves and calamus on their doors to drive away evil spirits and disease from their homes. The Dragon Boat Festival has been celebrated for over 2,000 years and is still enjoyed by many today!
